You\u2019ll never change. Why don&#8217;t you ever get it right?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I used to think the voice hated me. Coaching helped me see that it wasn\u2019t evil \u2014 it was scared. It wanted to protect me from feeling embarrassment, shame, or rejection ever again. The problem was, it used cruelty as armor.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bully.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12203\" style=\"width:381px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bully.png 1024w, https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bully-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bully-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bully-768x768.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Our inner critic isn\u2019t a villain. She\u2019s a part of us who learned to yell whenever we might get hurt. The trick is NOT to try silencing her because she gets more scared and screams more loudly. We want to retrain her so she can be our friend instead of a bully. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are two techniques that can help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. The Toddler Technique<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you had a toddler learning to walk and she fell down, would you scold her? Of course not. You\u2019d cheer her on, scoop her up, and help her try again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learning new habits works the same way. You\u2019re going to wobble sometimes. You might trip. But that doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019ve failed. It means you\u2019re learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Try offering yourself the same grace you\u2019d give a child finding her balance. It feels good to be supported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. The Helpful Employee Technique<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine your inner critic as a loyal employee who takes her job a little too seriously. She\u2019s constantly warning you of danger because she wants to protect you from getting hurt by painful emotions.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/flower-2-1024x683.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12204\" style=\"width:405px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/flower-2-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/flower-2-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/flower-2-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/flower-2-360x240.png 360w, https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/flower-2.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>What if, instead of firing her, you gave her a promotion?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thank her for her years of service, then hand her a new job description. Her new mission: protect you from harsh self-talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Write down the messages you want her to repeat instead \u2014 words that lift and support you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:7px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>I\u2019m learning. I&#8217;m getting better at this.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>I\u2019m growing stronger every day.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>I deserve patience and kindness.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When she slips into old habits (and she will), gently remind her, \u201cWe don\u2019t do that anymore.\u201d Then reread your new list of truths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time, she\u2019ll learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Retraining the inner critic isn\u2019t about perfection. It\u2019s about turning self-punishment into a loving partnership \u2014 and that&#8217;s the shift that changes everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Grow on!<\/strong><br>Create a list of messages that lift and support you. Think about supportive things you would say to your best friend and add those to your list. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep your list handy, and when you hear the old voices, or feel the weight of shame pressing you down, take a nice deep breath and read the list. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each time you become aware of negative self-talk, you can choose to gently practice shifting to the new thoughts.
