{"id":5029,"date":"2020-09-18T04:44:46","date_gmt":"2020-09-18T11:44:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/?p=5029"},"modified":"2022-08-10T12:55:49","modified_gmt":"2022-08-10T19:55:49","slug":"breathing-is-a-superpower","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/2020\/09\/18\/breathing-is-a-superpower\/","title":{"rendered":"Breathing is a Superpower"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Breathing itself is a superpower, because that\u2019s what inspires life.&nbsp; Literally.&nbsp; Without breathing, we cease to exist.&nbsp; Powerful!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet many people pay little or no attention to what\u2019s happening with their breath.&nbsp; Our lungs function without any conscious attention or effort on our part, so most of us take our breathing for granted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What if I told you that becoming aware of our current breath pattern, then consciously choosing to shift our breath allows us to harness that superpower?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Try it right now.&nbsp; Stop reading and take a long slow deep breath.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"614\" src=\"https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/breathing-1024x614.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5036\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/breathing-1024x614.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/breathing-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/breathing-768x461.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/breathing.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>What shifted for you?&nbsp; Likely what shifted is that more of your energy is here, now, which means more of it is available to you.&nbsp; Focusing on the breath brings us into the present moment. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a Hindu belief that says the number of breaths allotted to us in a lifetime is predetermined, and that we can delay the time of death by regulated breathing.&nbsp; <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Read more on that here (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/culturama.in\/2017\/07\/31\/dont-waste-your-breath\/\" target=\"_blank\">Read more on that here<\/a> and learn some breathing techniques to lengthen your life!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Shifting breath is a helpful first step in processing our emotions.&nbsp; <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s pretty well documented that we can change our breath pattern to disrupt negative emotions and change our mood.&nbsp; Deep, slow breathing into the belly is strong medicine for anxiety, fear and anger.&nbsp; Expectant mothers take classes in how to shift their breath so they are better prepared to face the pain and endurance required during childbirth.&nbsp; Athletes focus on breathing practices to help reduce fatigue and promote stamina.  I used to suffer from severe travel anxiety and changing my breath was the best tool I found to curtail it in the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I encourage clients to take a deep grounding breath as soon as they realize they are experiencing any emotion they do not wish to feel.&nbsp; It\u2019s the pause that gives us just enough space to choose how we wish to process the emotion.&nbsp; Focusing on our breath can be a powerful first step in shifting old behavior patterns, or trying to break a habit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"614\" src=\"https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/breathe-1024x614.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/breathe-1024x614.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/breathe-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/breathe-768x461.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/breathe.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"THIS article (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/psychcentral.com\/lib\/change-how-you-feel-change-how-you-breathe\/\ufeff\" target=\"_blank\">This article<\/a> in Psych Central talks about a study that indicates that emotions may be caused, at least in part, by the way we breathe!  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A shift in breathing is a shift in energy, and often allows a calmer perspective when we find ourselves in chaos.&nbsp; We can use breathing to decrease stress, calm nerves, sharpen focus, minimize negative thoughts, and increase energy! &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like I said, Superpower!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grow on!<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>How much attention do you pay to your breath?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is your normal breathing like?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How do you feel when you slow and deepen your breath?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Try inhaling deeply, then exhaling forcefully when you are experiencing an emotion you do not enjoy.&nbsp; What shifts for you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Explore different breathing techniques on YouTube.&nbsp; Which ones appeal to you?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Breathing itself is a superpower, because that\u2019s what inspires life.&nbsp; Literally.&nbsp; Without breathing, we cease to exist.&nbsp; Powerful!
