{"id":6107,"date":"2021-12-31T01:11:23","date_gmt":"2021-12-31T09:11:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/?p=6107"},"modified":"2021-12-31T16:32:31","modified_gmt":"2022-01-01T00:32:31","slug":"fuck-the-resolutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/2021\/12\/31\/fuck-the-resolutions\/","title":{"rendered":"Fuck the Resolutions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Many people start thinking about making changes in their life around this time of year and lots of us resolve to \u201cdo better\u201d at something.\u00a0 People tend to think of New Year Resolutions in broad strokes, making BIG changes that last all year.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kathycaprino\/2019\/12\/21\/the-top-3-reasons-new-years-resolutions-fail-and-how-yours-can-succeed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"According to Forbes (opens in a new tab)\">According to Forbes<\/a>, 80% of New Year\u2019s resolutions fail for a variety of reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One reason resolutions can fail is that humans tend to want the whole enchilada and when it does not come fast enough, we get discouraged and may stop trying.&nbsp; If the goal is to \u201creduce body mass by 30 pounds,\u201d then you\u2019ve only succeeded after the 30 pounds are gone.&nbsp; Every day between now and the day the weight is gone, we have \u201cfailed\u201d to meet the goal. See?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we\u2019re after a big goal, we\u2019re more likely to reach it if we have support in the way of an accountability partner or coach, and if we break that big goal into steps that become smaller goals that build confidence as we go. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I say fuck setting one big resolution for the year that \u201cchanges everything.\u201d I recommend that clients create smaller sustainable intentions that are actually steps leading to their big goal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s one small change you can make today that you could maintain for one week?&nbsp; There are millions of changes we could choose to focus on, but which one feels most beneficial for you right now? &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Here are just a few that my clients choose to focus on:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Increased hydration<\/li><li>Move the body more<\/li><li>Eat more vegetables<\/li><li>Reduce sugar intake<\/li><li>Track foods\/food journal&nbsp;<\/li><li>Add supplements<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"614\" src=\"https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/move2-1024x614.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6114\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/move2-1024x614.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/move2-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/move2-768x461.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/move2.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of trying to do all of these things (and more) until the big goal is achieved, set an intention to focus on one thing today.&nbsp; Just one.&nbsp; Just for today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then tomorrow, set an intention to focus on that same thing.&nbsp; If you follow your daily intention every day for a week, it is becoming more familiar, less cumbersome to carry out.&nbsp; At the end of the first week, ask yourself (if you\u2019re ready) which change you most want to undertake next.&nbsp; Then you can choose that as your new daily intention &#8211; alongside last week\u2019s intention. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the end of the January you will have made four small changes that you are practicing regularly.&nbsp; The first two at least will already feel like habit.&nbsp; You\u2019ll have reached four goals already, and be on your way toward your BIG goal.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These small daily\/weekly successes are the building blocks of the confidence we need to make those bigger changes.&nbsp; One reason resolutions can fail is we don\u2019t have the confidence that we are capable of creating change.&nbsp; So building confidence daily and weekly with changes that create improved health and well-being is crucial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"614\" src=\"https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/hiddenTreasure2-1024x614.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6116\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/hiddenTreasure2-1024x614.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/hiddenTreasure2-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/hiddenTreasure2-768x461.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/hiddenTreasure2.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you stick with the first intention from the first day and let that be your guiding intention for the whole month, think how much can change with just one change!&nbsp; Any one of the changes listed above done repetitively for one month (renewed each day as our intention) will create change we can see or feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s easier to maintain focus for one day than for a full year, so daily intentions can be far more effective than year-long resolutions.
