{"id":6782,"date":"2022-05-06T05:55:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-06T12:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/?p=6782"},"modified":"2024-05-15T10:43:27","modified_gmt":"2024-05-15T17:43:27","slug":"stop-choosing-stress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/2022\/05\/06\/stop-choosing-stress\/","title":{"rendered":"Stop Choosing Extra Helpings of Stress"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The dictionary says stress is a state of mental or emotional tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dictionary is wrong.&nbsp; How do I know?&nbsp; Because stress is a feeling &#8211; an emotion &#8211; and the only place our emotions come from is from the thoughts we think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adverse or very demanding circumstances will absolutely cause some people to think thoughts that lead to feeling stressed.&nbsp; Those exact same adverse or very demanding circumstances will cause others to think thoughts that lead to feeling exhilarated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/2020\/01\/24\/what-tea-am-i-brewing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thoughts create our Emotions, which drive our Actions<\/a>.  <br>We each brew our own TEA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"614\" src=\"https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/TEA-1024x614.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/TEA-1024x614.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/TEA-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/TEA-768x461.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/TEA.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>What Thoughts\/Emotions\/Actions am I conjuring?<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Since this is absolutely true, we want to select our thoughts with great care and intention. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Self-chosen stress vs normal, natural stress.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is a \u201cnormal\u201d or natural life stress?&nbsp; These are stressors that we cannot control, like aging, health concerns, natural disasters, financial setbacks.&nbsp; Those kinds of stress show up in every life, and Google can offer myriad advice on how to handle them.&nbsp; I want to talk about optional stress &#8211; the stress we choose that is completely unnecessary &#8211; yet is often MORE damaging to our health and peace of mind than natural stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Self-chosen stressors include, but are not limited to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>negative self-talk<\/li><li>self body shaming &amp; body hate<\/li><li>adopting weight loss strategies that are stringent &amp; impossible to maintain<\/li><li>artificially controlling appetite<\/li><li>limiting a needed macronutrient such as protein, fat, or carbohydrates<\/li><li>believing we are unlovable, and will never be loved unless we lose weight or look different<\/li><li>trying to create an impossible-to-have body<\/li><li>unfavorably comparing oneself to others<\/li><li>believing we are alone in this world, or that the universe is against us<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The list goes on, and is different for each of us.&nbsp; When we choose these stressors, we live under a constantly higher level of stress than is necessary.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of us have plenty of natural stress in life, so why would we choose this type of self-harming thinking?&nbsp; We have been conditioned over a lifetime to choose these stressors. We didn\u2019t make this stuff up.&nbsp; We didn\u2019t invent thinking negative thoughts about ourselves.&nbsp; The world we live in trained that behavior into us, some more than others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"614\" src=\"https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/beings-1024x614.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3041\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/beings-1024x614.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/beings-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/beings-768x461.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cyndicombs.com\/coaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/beings.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Other than the fact that stress feels crappy, why do we want to begin learning how to let go of these self-chosen stressors?&nbsp; Constant stress causes increased insulin, and increased cortisol which can lead to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>weight gain<\/li><li>inability to lose weight<\/li><li>inability to build muscle<\/li><li>decreased calorie burning<\/li><li>increased fat deposits at midsection<\/li><li>increased inflammation<\/li><li>gut microbiome die off<\/li><li>nutrient wasting<\/li><li>decreased energy<\/li><li>appetite deregulation<\/li><li>desensitivity to pleasure<\/li><li>decreased metabolism<\/li><li>decreased Thyroid function&nbsp;<\/li><li>decreased oxygen uptake<\/li><li>poor sleep<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So how do we begin to let go of these self-chosen stressors?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Awareness is always the first step.<br>We cannot change it if we do not see it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The<em> Grow on! <\/em>section below includes a way to begin cultivating more awareness around self-chosen stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t beat yourself up for thinking stressful thoughts!&nbsp; It\u2019s a conditioned human behavior. Give yourself some grace, practice letting go of self-chosen stressors, and see what happens for yourself!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grow on!<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How does stress show up in your body?<\/strong>&nbsp; &nbsp;<br>Write a physical description of how it feels when you are STRESSED about something. For some people it will include sweaty palms, or a racing heart. For others it might feel like a twist in the solar plexus or a kick in the gut. Whatever it is for you, take a minute to describe the physical sensations that arise for you when you feel stressed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Practice awareness by noticing these physical symptoms each time they show up.<\/strong> As you become aware that you are feeling your symptoms of stress &#8211; ask yourself what thought you were thinking that caused the symptoms.
